The Psychosocial Factors Affecting Suicidal Ideation of the Elderly

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to investigate the inner characteristics or the psychosocial factors of the elderly which are related to their intention of suicide in a bid to seek ways of preventing suicide in senescence by offering interventions of mental health professionals and workable practical strategies.
The participants were 174 Kore n elderly people whose ages were over 65. The questionnaires and psychological tests used re n is research included the following: Suicidal Ideation Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form, Rosenberg¡¯s Self-Esteem Scale, The Hopelessness Scale, Social Support Appraisals Scale, FACES-¥², The owing: Survey, and Questionnaire for Participating Social Activity.
Results indicated that the elderly who were not having been educated in formal school setting, Buddhist, or with low economic level showed suicidal ideation more frequently than those who were not. Self-esteem, social supports, family cohesion, participating social activity were negatively related to suicidal ideation, while experiencing discrimination against the elderly was positively related to. A regression analysis revealed that depression, self-esteem, family cohesion, discrimination against the elderly, and participating social activity were significant predictors for suicidal ideation of the elderly. They accounted for around 51% variance of suicidal ideation of the elderly.
This study reiterates the roles of depression, self-esteem, and social supports, and suggests influences of family cohesion, ageism, and social activity on suicidal intention of the elderly. These results may provide useful information for health practitioners.
